NOIT is a creative journal published by Flat Time House. Comprising new writing and visual contributions, NOIT explores the theoretical concerns and artwork of John Latham (1921–2006), and their continued relevance.

The fourth edition, NOIT—4 Reflections, is dedicated to writing by Noa Latham on his father’s art and ideas. It provides one of the most comprehensive overviews of John Latham’s cosmology printed to date and combines a decades long critical investigation into his father’s work with intimate account of their time together.

NOIT — 4 Reflections is accompanied by a selection of material collated by Noa Latham. The website postings are divided into three sections – interactions, exhibition contributions and short essays.

Noa Latham:

The materials posted here accompany the essays published in NOIT—4. Together they form a collection of writings about John Latham’s art and ideas from my per- spective as his son and as a philosophy professor. They fall into three groups. First there are the interactions, consisting of correspondence and early pieces I wrote for him. Next there are contributions made for exhibitions, all composed after his death on January 1, 2006. These are overviews that serve as standalone pieces that do not presuppose any previous acquaintance with John’s work. Finally there are what I am calling “Short essays”. These currently consist of three short pieces that I cut out of NOIT—4 to present as appendices. Unlike those NOIT—4 essays that are now set in stone, I intend these essays to be revisable, and I may add some new ones here in the future.

The Incidental Unit (IU) was formed in 2016 with direct support of the Artist Placement Group (APG - 1966-89), and O+I (1989-2009), in order to continue to develop a rigorous approach to socially engaged art practice today. IU provides critical support space in which to discuss and exchange ideas with artists, curators and 'incidental persons' without the expectations or evaluative frameworks of an artistic commission, gallery briefing or social project. To this end, IU draws out key ideas, methods, process and rationale for maintaining the independent and critical work of artists and curators, connecting the historical legacy of APG with the complex nature of social practice now.

In 2018-19 the IU is working towards six public meetings at institutions in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle followed by a large-scale launch event in London. We are recruiting an individual to coordinate the activity and programming of the Incidental Unit over this time period.

Lisson Gallery presents its first New York exhibition of British artist John Latham (1921–2006). The exhibition reveals Latham’s remarkable multi-faceted practice through works made throughout his career, focusing on his “skoob” pieces, and highlighting his powerful contribution and lasting influence on the global development of Conceptual art.

Flat Time House hosted The Bad Vibes Club in 2017-18, a forum for research into negative states, founded by Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau in 2014.

Mary Hurrell will be on residence during October and November 2017 at FTHo, as part of the Radical Affinities collaborative curatorial project between Kunstraum and Flat Time House, London, supported by Cockayne, Grants for the Arts. During the residency Hurrell will be using the John Latham Archive to develop research towards a new body of work.

The Radical Affinities residency will culminate with a solo exhibition and performance at Kunstraum and FTHo in 2018.

Constellations is a research and development programme for artists who are either working with, or have the desire to work with people in community contexts. The programme supports artists to develop their practice, collaborate with others, access new networks, and spend time at Flat Time House as a place to study and research between monthly workshop sessions.

A new collaboration between UP Projects and Flat Time House.

We are excited to announce that the following artists will be joining Constellations as members of the working group: Beverley Bennett, Connie Butler, Ting-Ting Cheng, Edmund Cook, Carla Cruz, Sophie Hoyle, Gal Leshem and Camara Taylor. Running from October 2017 – May 2018, the group will explore different methods and approaches to artistic research and community-orientated practice, through a series of day-long monthly workshops hosted by Flat Time House. Alongside the workshops, there will also be two public events, the form and content of which will be shaped and determined by the group collaboratively.

The future of Flat Time House, Peckham, the studio home of the late British artist John Latham, has been secured. The Estate of John Latham and Flat Time House Institute are delighted to announce that a purchaser for 210 Bellenden Road has come forward, generously allowing Flat Time House Institute to continue operating in its current premises. The Santarelli Family and Dino and Ernesta Santarelli Foundation will take ownership of the property that accommodates Flat Time House and the institute will continue to operate independently in the original studio and home of John Latham.

Take a little piece of Flat Time House home with you! For The Shift exhibition, Antony Hudek has created stickers of the phrase 'the shift' replicated exactly as it appears on the walls throughout Flat Time House. Their presence refers to the shift in perception from rational to intuitive thought as well as the paradigm shift that would be required for the establishment to take on board the new cosmology presented by Latham’s theory of ‘Flat Time’.

The Open Sky, was published by Rory Pilgrim in conjunction with his show at Flat Time House. 

This exhibition and events programme brings together the work of the six graduating students from the MA Sound Arts at London College of Communication, UAL. The show presents an opportunity to encounter the rich diversity of practices emerging from this course, now in its eighth year. Playfully borrowing the title of Judith Butler's eponymous 1993 book on the iterative nature of performativity and its political implications, the works of the six artists, foregrounded in the embodied processes of listening, engage questions of gesture and labour, translation and memory, amongst other critical interests, in work that spans performance, installation and sound poetry.

FTHo's artist and curator-led workshops, on-going and creative archiving projects are challenging learning experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Now in its third year, the N-U* graduate residency is intended give mentorship to an emerging artist, as well as time and space to research and develop their artistic consciousness.
