FTHo's Curator/Director Gareth Bell-Jones will be speaking about John Latham’s challenges to ideas of perceived knowledge at Publication Scaffold, a series of events, performances, installations and discussions during the opening weekend of 2019’s Dublin Art Book Fair.

We are excited to announce the commencement of an ambitious new development of the Flat Time House site including new studios and an education space. We are working with EBBA Architects to renovate the outbuildings of Flat Time House, which comprise a former Victorian stable and a garage space attached to the building and leading to FTHo’s garden.

Constellations invites you to take part in three unique workshops taking place as part of the Life Rewired season at the Barbican. Through collaboration, co-creation and peer-to-peer learning methodologies, each workshop explores the implications of an accelerated, networked lifestyle on human relations. All sessions are free and advance booking is recommended. 

Meetings Postponed Until Further Notice

After some years of nomadic existence, The Impossible University are taking up residence at Flat Time House from the autumn of 2019. We will continue to gather in the insistent and determined spirit of an anti-institution as a place of exchange and camaraderie that might lead to new ways of working or producing.

The Incidental Unit presents this two-day event to mark the culmination of the Incidental Futures programme.

On Friday 13 September a study day will explore historical examples of Artist Placement Group to consider how these experiments anticipated key challenges presently facing art, artists, the worlds of art and beyond. 

On Saturday 14 September, a curated assembly will convene contemporary practices inspired Artist Placement Group. Activated by their artist practitioners, each instance will highlight the long-term impact of the Artist Placement Group on cultural production across the UK. 

Artists: Michele Allen, Johann Arens, Charles Danby and Rob Smith, Corinna Dean, KALEIDOWORKS, Nicola Ellis, Simon Farid, Rob Flint, Amanda Loomes and Laura Purseglove. 

Flat Time House and UP projects will be talking about the Constellations programme at the South London Gallery Fire Station as part of Working it out, a weekend of pop-up events aimed at young people considering a career in the arts. A fair on Sunday for organisations running alternative arts programmes outside of academic institutions will present the opportunity to discover more about new learning models from across the UK. 

This Incidental Futures meeting will be led by artist Jane Lawson. With an introduction into the history of the Artist Placement Group to its third, present day iteration, Incidental Unit, the meeting will convene to think through the legacy of the Artist Placement Group in Manchester.

For the first time Flat Time House is contributing to a display of works by John Latham at the 62nd Festival of Two Worlds, Spoleto, Italy. 

The Sir Denis Mahon Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Flat Time House, Richard Saltoun, Ulay Foundation and Age of Future, present 'Visionaries and the Art of Performance', previously on display at Guildhall Art Gallery in London (11 December 2018 – 30 April 2019). Through the work of several artists, the exhibition suggests that visionary qualities are not exclusive to one period or personality, but they are enduring characteristics of artistic creativity.

The exhibition includes work by John Latham, Edward Coley Burne-Jones, William Blake and ULAY amongst others.

Drawing on the history of gasholders in King’s Cross, Constellations will present a series of participatory activities that explore ideas related to public space as part of Art Night 2019.

This Incidental Futures meeting is led by artist Oliver Sutherland, Jessy Young of design duo Conway and Young, and Euella Jackson and Elinor Lower of Rising Arts Agency. Following an introduction to the history of the Artist Placement Group – from its inception to its present day iteration as the Incidental Unit – participants are invited to share their own thoughts and practice. The meeting aims to consider contemporary models, catalysts and disruptions for artistic production and the working conditions in which they take place.

FTHo's friends at Villa Lontana present, MACHISMO, the third in a series of contemporary art exhibitions in collaboration with Fondazione Dino ed Ernesta Santarelli’s Collection. The series aims to create fluid platforms of encounter between the sculptures and works from the collection with contemporary art practices.

Following a series of workshops used to collaboratively devise an exhibition, Outlet, students from year 2 BA Design for Art Direction (DfAD) at London College of Communication, will hold a public discussion at Flat Time House which will consider the dynamics, potentials and obstacles of collaboration in creative processes.

We are thrilled to announce our Constellations 2019/20 artists! The selected group of 8 artists from across the UK will come together, collaborate and experiment with models of co-creation and social practice. The artists joining Constellations for the period April 2019 - January 2020 are: Angharad Davies, Katie Fiore, Miki Holloway, Dunya Kalantery, Hannah Kemp-Welch, Edwin Mingard, Mai Omer and Amanda Ramasawmy.

Constellations is a research and development programme for artists who are working with socio-political issues, community-oriented practice and/or public contexts. The programme supports artists who are interested in further developing their practice, collaborating with others, and accessing new networks, with the opportunity to study and research at Flat Time House between monthly workshop sessions.

The work recreates in spray paint the waveform of the moment of detection of gravitational waves at the LIGO laboritory in 2015. Painted on raincoat faric, the work is intended to be used as a table cloth or wall hung. Edition of 20.

Join Incidental Unit (IU) as artist Anthony Schrag hosts the first meeting of the Incidental Futures (IF) programme. First came APG, then O+I and now IU. Find out more about this lineage of radical artistic practice and feed into our current research into their impact on socially engaged, public facing practice today. Through the ‘incidental meeting’ format we will come together to attend to APG’s unfinished business.

The IU was developed with original members of the Artist Placement Group (APG, 1989 - 2009) and its successor, Organization + Imagination (O+I, 1989 - 2009). Since 2016, the IU seeks to reignite and enrich debates around the role of the artist in contemporary society and, more specifically, around current modes of socially engaged practice in the UK.

Incidental Futures is the first touring public programme organised by IU. Through ‘incidental meetings’, IU invites participants to join these public events and is calling upon all to share thoughts and practice to attend to the APG’s ‘unfinished business’. This programme aims to collect material, facilitate conversation and inspire action.
