To celebrate the practices and individuals supported by the Chelsea Arts Club Trust, Flat Time House is hosting a salon exhibition of work by recent awardees. This is to coincide with the first-ever residency at Flat Time House for a Chelsea Arts Club Trust award recipient, which was awarded to artist Katie Shannon in Summer 2025.

Working in partnership with UP Projects and Deveron Projects, the Constellations ° Cohort 2023 will be taking part in a paid week-long group residency in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. The residency will be an opportunity for the cohort to extend the collaborative work and peer to peer learning undertaken during the Constellations programme.

The residency will delve further into the questions, challenges and learnings that have been uncovered over the past months and connect with this through the unique context and organisational practice at Deveron Projects. Through a programme of walks, workshops, meetings and events, the cohort will explore the conditions that both impact the work we do as creative practitioners, and the conditions that we can create, through the process of making artworks collaboratively with communities. From self-actualising communities to thinking like forests, disrupting systems of exchange to care and maintenance, each day of the residency will question what is the role of creative practitioners and artworks in creating social justice and how do we do this work well?

UP Projects is working in partnership with John Hansard Gallery to present Co-Creating Public Space: How can we thrive? a one-day conference taking place at MAST Mayflower Studios, Southampton. 

Co-Creating Public Space: How can we thrive? is part of Constellations 2023, curated by UP Projects in partnership with Flat Time House and in association with Liverpool Biennial.

Informed by notions of care and principles underpinning alternative economies, the conference will look at how creative practice can build collectivity by sharing resources, values and opportunities in equitable ways.

Constellations 2023 supports a group of ten early to mid-career practitioners from across the UK, the Constellations ° Cohort, to develop their practice, collaborate with others, access new networks, and contribute to critical debate surrounding the future of public practice. The programme will explore urgent lines of enquiry and best practice in relation to this field, including questions around the potential of art to help communities reimagine new futures, principles underpinning alternative economies, and notions of care.

Selected through an open call, the Constellations ° Cohort 2023 are Seyi Adelekun, Ian Giles, Holly Graham, Faye Hamblett-Jones, Benjamin Malcolmson, James McColl, Laura Onions, Cherelle Sappleton, Giulia Shah and Becky Warnock.

Applications are now open for Constellations 2023, a free, eight-month learning and development programme for artists, curators, producers, and practitioners active and/or interested in the expanded field of public art.

Flat Time House is pleased to announce the open call for Constellations, a free, nine-month learning and development programme for artists, curators, producers, and practitioners active and/or interested in the expanded field of public art. Constellations is curated and delivered by UP Projects, working in partnership with Flat Time House and Liverpool Biennial. By ‘the expanded field of public art’, we mean the work that happens at the intersection of contemporary art and culture, social practice, and the public realm.

Taking inspiration from British artist John Latham’s unique approach to the role of time and event, students from BA (Hons) Design for Art Direction at London College of Communication will organise an activity-based discursion around the themes embodied by Flat Time House, Latham’s former home.

Through this ’incidental event’ - lasting for an undefined period of time - visitors to the space are invited to search for prompts and questions; ‘chits’ hidden across the gallery. These chits, when uncovered, can be exchanged for a printout relating to John Latham’s lectures. The task engages Latham’s reflective and intuitive approaches to interrogating space and will continue until all chits have been found.

Over the past term students on the BA (Hons) Design for Art Direction course at London College of Communication have been engaged in research about work in relation to the legacies of Flat Time House, John Latham and the Artist Placement Group (APG). Works included in this online exhibition consider various questions surrounding labour conditions such as feminised labour, disembodied communication, social exclusion and the overproduction of content.

Flat Time House, in partnership with UP Projects, is delighted to announce the open call for Constellations 2020–21, a free artist development programme that supports eight UK-based artists to explore socio-political issues, community-oriented practice, and public contexts.  

This year’s iteration will also consider the digital realm as a platform for collaboration, engagement, and exchange as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are looking for artists who are interested in experimenting with alternative forms of learning and exploring the challenges and opportunities of the digital realm.

Starting in July 2020, the programme will be structured around a series of artist-led and self-led workshops taking place both online and offline over the course of eight months.

Constellations invites you to take part in three unique workshops taking place as part of the Life Rewired season at the Barbican. Through collaboration, co-creation and peer-to-peer learning methodologies, each workshop explores the implications of an accelerated, networked lifestyle on human relations. All sessions are free and advance booking is recommended. 

Meetings Postponed Until Further Notice

After some years of nomadic existence, The Impossible University are taking up residence at Flat Time House from the autumn of 2019. We will continue to gather in the insistent and determined spirit of an anti-institution as a place of exchange and camaraderie that might lead to new ways of working or producing.

The Incidental Unit presents this two-day event to mark the culmination of the Incidental Futures programme.

On Friday 13 September a study day will explore historical examples of Artist Placement Group to consider how these experiments anticipated key challenges presently facing art, artists, the worlds of art and beyond. 

On Saturday 14 September, a curated assembly will convene contemporary practices inspired Artist Placement Group. Activated by their artist practitioners, each instance will highlight the long-term impact of the Artist Placement Group on cultural production across the UK.

This Incidental Futures meeting will be led by artist Jane Lawson. With an introduction into the history of the Artist Placement Group to its third, present day iteration, Incidental Unit, the meeting will convene to think through the legacy of the Artist Placement Group in Manchester.

Drawing on the history of gasholders in King’s Cross, Constellations will present a series of participatory activities that explore ideas related to public space as part of Art Night 2019.

This Incidental Futures meeting is led by artist Oliver Sutherland, Jessy Young of design duo Conway and Young, and Euella Jackson and Elinor Lower of Rising Arts Agency. Following an introduction to the history of the Artist Placement Group – from its inception to its present day iteration as the Incidental Unit – participants are invited to share their own thoughts and practice. The meeting aims to consider contemporary models, catalysts and disruptions for artistic production and the working conditions in which they take place.
