Flat Time House is delighted to present Choose Your Own Father the first UK project by Pakistan based artist Madyha Leghari. This new commission derives from extensive archival research into John Latham’s early history in Zambia, fictionalising personal histories of Latham’s father and interweaving these with those of Leghari's own father. Ultimately, she uses the figure of the father as a metaphor to speak about paternalistic order, the fantasy of “The West”, myths of origin and whether one can ever be free to choose one’s own fathers.

Produced as an outcome of the Delta (Δ) Research Placement for Flat Time House's new online platform, the film is anchored by a consistent voiceover but is edited afresh through code each time it is played. It has an exact mathematical number of permutations but these amount to far more than what is possible to view. In this sense, the film is poised between control and fatalism, akin to how one might imagine one’s influences.

Madyha Leghari is an artist who uses language and its counterpart silence, as a medium and initiator of her work, examining 'silences created by the failures of language'. Following an open call, Madyha Leghari was awarded The Delta (Δ) Research Placement to undertake remote research with the John Latham Archive.

Padraig Robinson’s Five Short Stories on Fire encounters John Latham’s deployment of books and fire as temporality and event, using the broadcast format as a way to talk about the screen itself as a territory of attention. The commission sees Padraig Robinson experiment with a new direction, drawing on the domestic context of Flat Time House.

The film takes place in one day in the life of The Novelist (Anne von Keller), who is beginning the first day of writing a book called Five Short Stories on Fire. The day follows her through her domestic space; sleeping, eating, writing and researching, where she encounters the environmental historian Stephen J. Pyne (played by himself). During the course of the day the Novelist seems haunted by ‘The Wanderer’ (Francesco Vellei), who may in fact be a fictional character she is writing, one whose relationship with fire is very different from her own. The film begins with the Novelist waking up, and ends with her falling asleep.

Come along to hear from some of the UK's most dynamic poets as they present new work in response to Flat Time House's exhibition, The Bard. Over 250 years after the young William Blake saw a vision of an angel in a tree on Peckham Rye, Flat Time House has commissioned six poets to bring their words and visions to Peckham. Each of the poets has been commissioned to write in response to the life and work of William Blake and/or in response to that other creator of cosmologies, John Latham. You will have time to see how the poet's words have been installed on the walls of Flat Time House as part of the exhibition, as well as hearing the new work written in response to two artists (Blake and Latham) who felt they 'must create a system or be enslaved by another man's' (Jerusalem).  

Join poets and psychogeographers Chris McCabe and Niall McDevitt on a Blake-inspired walk through Peckham. Drawing on The Bard exhibition at Flat Time House, McCabe and McDevitt will lead you through this area of London associated with Blake's ramblings.

Flat Time House is excited to be hosting a live event for the London launch of Villa Lontana Records first LP, 21 - 9 - 18 by Andrés Saenz de Sicilia. Saenz de Sicilia will perform live at Flat Time House using a multi-channel sound system across the space.

Free Event

Flat Time House is excited to host the summer solstice launch party for Laure Prouvost’s new book Legsicon, published by Book Works and M HKA. Legsicon delves into the philosophical depths of the artist’s practice, through the familiar, if transformed, format of a lexicon, to portray the work of an artist developing complex thought through artistic languages. Deviating from a typical monograph, Legsicon functions as a sort of dictionary, exploring and expanding on thirty-six notions in Prouvost’s work, with each incorporating a commissioned text, new drawings created by the artist and selected documentation of her related works.

Before his death, Laure worked for several years in the house as John Latham’s assistant here at Flat Time House.

There will be readings from the book starting at 7.30pm, by Laure Prouvost, and Paul Buck, Melissa Gronlund, Nav Haq, Elisa Kay, Barbara Stevini, Maija Timonen, and Mark Webber.

Flat Time House presents a live performance event by Louis d’Heudieres and Annika Kahrs. The event consists of Strings, a piece by Kahrs for string quartet, and a lecture-performance, it’s about time, by d’Heudieres.

In Strings, a string quartet plays the opening bars of Beethoven’s C minor op. 18 No. 4. In a dramatic progression, violins, viola and violoncello combine rising Fortissimo and quiet Staccati to a harmonic whole. This coordinated homogeneity comes to an end as the playing stops after the first melody and each musician swaps position and instrument with their neighbour to the right. With each other’s instruments, things become very different. The playing starts a balancing act between fragility and catastrophe. A tone leaps from the sequence, and seconds of silence occur between sharp and lucid dissonance. Clearly unsettled, the participants fight through the score until every player has sat in every chair.

d’Heudieres’ new lecture-performance it's about time uses La Monte Young's Composition 1960 #10 as a springboard for considering the infinities contained within music, time and space. In addition, new pieces developed specially for FTHo will be presented.

What happens on the threshold where the home and the public meet? What kind of face does a place need to put on to become public-facing – and how can it express welcomeness and be welcomed? When a house tries to make itself hospitable, what happens to us inside?

Join us for a day of workshops, performances and discussion, moving between three neighbouring venues in Peckham. Events include artist demonstrations, writers' seminars, performances, talks, and a 'pub' quiz full of the unexpected. Guests include Sally O'Reilly, Megan Rooney, Audrey Reynolds, David Raymond Conroy, Lucy Vann, and Daisy Hildyard.

Hosted by Flat Time House in collaboration with MA Writing students from the Royal College of Art.

Attendance is free across all three venues and all events but booking is required.

As part of her exhibition the billion year spree Annika Kahrs has invited a series of guests to create a special programme of performances, concerts and talks.
