FTHo's friends at Villa Lontana present, MACHISMO, the third in a series of contemporary art exhibitions in collaboration with Fondazione Dino ed Ernesta Santarelli’s Collection. The series aims to create fluid platforms of encounter between the sculptures and works from the collection with contemporary art practices.

Following a series of workshops used to collaboratively devise an exhibition, Outlet, students from year 2 BA Design for Art Direction (DfAD) at London College of Communication, will hold a public discussion at Flat Time House which will consider the dynamics, potentials and obstacles of collaboration in creative processes.

We are thrilled to announce our Constellations 2019/20 artists! The selected group of 8 artists from across the UK will come together, collaborate and experiment with models of co-creation and social practice. The artists joining Constellations for the period April 2019 - January 2020 are: Angharad Davies, Katie Fiore, Miki Holloway, Dunya Kalantery, Hannah Kemp-Welch, Edwin Mingard, Mai Omer and Amanda Ramasawmy.

Constellations is a research and development programme for artists who are working with socio-political issues, community-oriented practice and/or public contexts. The programme supports artists who are interested in further developing their practice, collaborating with others, and accessing new networks, with the opportunity to study and research at Flat Time House between monthly workshop sessions.

Join Incidental Unit (IU) as artist Anthony Schrag hosts the first meeting of the Incidental Futures (IF) programme. First came APG, then O+I and now IU. Find out more about this lineage of radical artistic practice and feed into our current research into their impact on socially engaged, public facing practice today. Through the ‘incidental meeting’ format we will come together to attend to APG’s unfinished business.

The IU was developed with original members of the Artist Placement Group (APG, 1989 - 2009) and its successor, Organization + Imagination (O+I, 1989 - 2009). Since 2016, the IU seeks to reignite and enrich debates around the role of the artist in contemporary society and, more specifically, around current modes of socially engaged practice in the UK.

Incidental Futures is the first touring public programme organised by IU. Through ‘incidental meetings’, IU invites participants to join these public events and is calling upon all to share thoughts and practice to attend to the APG’s ‘unfinished business’. This programme aims to collect material, facilitate conversation and inspire action.

Independent curator and writer Jes Fernie is Curator in Residence at Flat Time House in January and February 2019. She will be developing her Archive of Destruction project,a critical analysis of public artwork made over the last century that has been destroyed by natural causes or by human action through fear, boredom, greed, decay and love. She will be looking into FTHo archives and developing partnerships in Amsterdam, Great Yarmouth and London.

Visions and Visionaries opening on the 11th December at Guildhall Art Gallery presents John Latham alongside a host of other visionary artists. included are Sir John Gilbert’s depiction of two knights ambushed by fairies in a moon-lit forest, Marcello Pecchioli’s ‘Alien Priest’, and John Latham’s experimental screen print, NO IT, 1967. These works are presented together alongside work by Edward Burne-Jones, currently, the subject of a major exhibition at Tate Britain; Dante Gabriel Rossetti; John Everett Millais; and Turner Prize-winning ceramicist, Grayson Perry.

The legendary independent London bookstore Better Books on the Charing Cross Road was the hub for Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Alexander Trocchi, John Latham, Jeff Nuttall, Bob Cobbing, Barry Miles, Gustav Metzger, and countless others, for their ideas and approaches to art, film, literature, and activism. With its unique range of books, offbeat events, poetry readings, film screenings, and happenings, Better Books became the hot spot of London’s 1960s counter-culture scene.

This book is the first to examine this special historic moment, combining previously unpublished texts, documents, and photographs with the voices of the protagonists who authored this revolution.

With Essays by Rozemin Keshvani and Barry Miles and contributions by Philip Cohen, Stephen Dwoskin, John Hopkins, Graham Keen, Bruce Lacey, Gustav Metzger, Jeff Nuttall, Frank Popper, Criton Tomazos, and Islwyn Watkins.

This book follows the exhibition by the same name, curated by Rozemin Keshvani, that was presented at ZKM, Karlsruhe; at Flat Time House, London; and at Trondheim kunstmuseum.

For this group exhibition, 49 Nord 6 Est—Frac Lorraine spotlights non-systematic processes of dissemination of information and alternative modes of sharing knowledge. The British conceptual artist John Latham (1921–2006) developed a body of theories that occasionally delved into contradiction, sowing confusion, provoking disapproval, or stirring enthusiasm. His approach constitutes the groundwork of this show, which brings together artistic practices of different backgrounds and generations. The accessibility of knowledge and its arbitrary dissemination raise issues addressed by the artists who explore alternative paths. At a time when the gap between opinion and knowledge is closing, and the relationship between materiality and knowledge is undergoing a profound transformation, the present project introduces approaches that reflect processes of information transmission in order to reevaluate the experiences produced by these practices.

Flat Time House is delighted to announce a new collaboration with the Royal College of Art, MA Writing Programme. For 15 Months between Autumn 2018 and Autumn 2019 students will work with and from FTHo to produce an event or series of events culminating with the group collectively acting as editors of the 2019 edition of NOIT, FTHo's annual journal of John Latham's art and ideas.

This residency continues FTHo’s role as a centre for alternative learning, and will give an opportunity for the students to experience first-hand how an artist or a writer might approach a residency in a collection or public institution. The writing students will have access to the John Latham Archive and will explore Latham’s practice, his theoretical ideas and their continued relevance.  The form, nature and content of the events and publication will be determined by the group, but will derive from the context of sessions in the space. FTHo will help guide and inform the students to produce something that takes into the account the context, environment and history of the space, in order to generate something ambitious, while also sensitive and germane.

We're thrilled to introduce Polly Wright, who has joined us as the Coordinator of the Incidental Unit, a new group formed in 2016 with direct support of the Artist Placement Group (APG - 1966-89), and O+I (1989-2009), in order to continue to develop a rigorous approach to socially engaged art practice today.

Polly's immediate focus will be facilitating the Incidental Futures programme in collaboration with the rest of the Incidental Unit. In 2018-19 the IU is working towards six public meetings at Eastside Projects, Birmingham; Spike Island, Bristol; Summerhall, Edinburgh; Bluecoat, Liverpool; The Whitworth, Manchester; and Baltic 39, Newcastle; followed by a large-scale launch event at the South London Gallery, Peckham. We're delighted this project will benefit from Polly's expertise and enthusiasm.

NOIT — 4 Reflections is accompanied by a selection of material collated by Noa Latham. The website postings are divided into three sections – interactions, exhibition contributions and short essays.

Noa Latham:

The materials posted here accompany the essays published in NOIT—4. Together they form a collection of writings about John Latham’s art and ideas from my per- spective as his son and as a philosophy professor. They fall into three groups. First there are the interactions, consisting of correspondence and early pieces I wrote for him. Next there are contributions made for exhibitions, all composed after his death on January 1, 2006. These are overviews that serve as standalone pieces that do not presuppose any previous acquaintance with John’s work. Finally there are what I am calling “Short essays”. These currently consist of three short pieces that I cut out of NOIT—4 to present as appendices. Unlike those NOIT—4 essays that are now set in stone, I intend these essays to be revisable, and I may add some new ones here in the future.

The Incidental Unit (IU) was formed in 2016 with direct support of the Artist Placement Group (APG - 1966-89), and O+I (1989-2009), in order to continue to develop a rigorous approach to socially engaged art practice today. IU provides critical support space in which to discuss and exchange ideas with artists, curators and 'incidental persons' without the expectations or evaluative frameworks of an artistic commission, gallery briefing or social project. To this end, IU draws out key ideas, methods, process and rationale for maintaining the independent and critical work of artists and curators, connecting the historical legacy of APG with the complex nature of social practice now.

In 2018-19 the IU is working towards six public meetings at institutions in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle followed by a large-scale launch event in London. We are recruiting an individual to coordinate the activity and programming of the Incidental Unit over this time period.
