Moving from I to WE
an evening of readings from the WE (Not I) sessions
1 May 2015 from 7pm
WE (Not I) is a series of collaborative working meetings, presentations, and events of over 40 female artists, writers, curators and thinkers that will produce and distribute content addressing questions around the role of “We” in contemporary art practice.
Bringing the drafts of content produced during the week, Moving from I to We will serve as an experimental site of presentation and discussion which will encourage a loose association between audience and presenter by expanding the format of the sessions to a public evening. Readings will be throughout the house and punctuate the evening at random, while a barbecue will be shared in the garden.
The evening includes readings by Natasha Soobramanien and Luke Williams from their upcoming collaborative novel, Eva Kenny: Are you a female genius? plus Letitia Beatriz: Incantations, Gil Leung: Acts of Love and Pretence, Jessica Wiesner: Female Time, Joanne Tatham, Karolin Meunier, Vivian Zherl: the WE (Not I) Manifesto, and Melissa Gordon and Marina Vishmidt amongst others.
The evening runs form 7pm. All welcome, booking is not required
Working across South London Gallery, Flat Time House, and Raven Row, and beginning with a week of events between the 27th April - 2nd May 2015, the discussions and presentations of WE (Not I) will revolve around the topics of accumulation in collaborative art practice, the development of a “we” (non-singular) voice in art authorship, the gendered nature of art historic genius, female value, piracy, empathy as a radical position, and the edges of the self in relation to both circulated imagery and the medicated body .
Daily private work meetings between the female participants will evolve in a way that both reflects and enacts the idea of the 'non-singular' voice of artistic production. Sharing and discussion throughout the week will be the principal mode of practice, acting as a site of productive space for each of the participants.
WE (Not I) has been organised by the artist Melissa Gordon and the writer Marina Vishmidt, who have together previously, with Kaisa Lassinaro, produced the publications LABOUR (2011) and PERSONA (2013). WE (Not I) will also take place at Artists Space, New York with a different group of participants in September 2015. The content developed during both sessions of WE (Not I) will be published in a series of magazines in 2015/16 edited by Gordon and Vishmidt.
More information about the other public events can be found on the South London Gallery Website.
