EVENTUAL
PIP BENVENISTE

10 May 2009

A looped screening of Pip Benveniste's 1968 film Eventual, featuring the work of Stuart Brisley, John Latham, and Jeffrey Shaw.

Eventual includes footage of one of John Latham's Skoob Tower Ceremonies at the London law courts, and inflatable environments by Jeffrey Shaw during the summer of '68.

"A gritty film about the beginnings of event art in England, focusing on the work of three artists; John Latham, Stuart Brisley, Jeffrey Shaw, who have rejected artifact and moved out into the London streets for the first experiments in non-gallery involvement. Exploding books and invisible paintings, bloody murder and neon art, giant inflatables and revolution are some of the events recorded during a summer of fusions. Part of the sequence on inflatables was filmed at the Hornsey College of Art during the 1968 student sit-in. It's a happy film; still makes me laugh. I made it at a time when my painting was literally moving off the edge of the canvas and I was pleased to discover through this film that the same thing was happening to other artists all over England."
