Ben Cain will be in conversation with FTHo curator Gareth Bell-Jones on his exhibition Passive Imperative Participation Vibe. Cain will discuss themes that are recurrent throughout his practice and specifically in the installation at Flat Time House. The discussion will place particular emphasis on John Latham and Ben Cain's use of objects as a means to convey duration and the means by which Cain adapted his artwork for a domestic environment.

Whipped Up is a collaborative project by of a group of graduating students form the Royal College of Art. Working alongside curator Gareth Bell-Jones and researcher Marina Hadjilouca the group has been exploring the concept of instruction art at FTHo. The exhibition is based on a set of instructions written anonymously by each of the artists. A selection of these instructions have been physically ‘whipped up’ in the gallery space in 8 hours and will be on show at a private view at Kunstraum.

Holly Slingsby will be in conversation with writer Beth Bramich to celebrate the publication of Knotted Mass II, published by Publication Studio London in collaboration with The Bower. 

Knotted Mass II is an artist’s book developed from Slingsby’s 2016 performance of the same name at a pop-up project, Finishing Touch, London. It includes texts and images from the performance, new drawings, photographic documentation, and a specially commissioned text by Beth Bramich. Books available to buy at the launch include a special edition bookmark with a strand of the artist's hair.

Knotted Mass II is published by Publication Studio London in collaboration with The Bower.

Lina Hermsdorf will be in conversation with FTHo curator Gareth Bell-Jones on her exhibition State 0 - her ambitious installation throughout John Latham's studio home. Hermsdorf will discuss themes that are recurrent throughout her practice and specifically in the installation at Flat Time House and previously at Künstlerhaus Bremen. State 0’s relationship to her wider practice will be considered and her affinity with FTHo as a 'living sculpture' and John Latham's artwork at large, with particular discussion on the emphasis on Latham’s symbolic use of glass as a medium.

Flat Time House Curator/Director Gareth Bell-Jones leads a tour of the exhibition, A World View: John Latham at the Serpentine Gallery. In addition to giving context and backgroud information on specific artworks, he will also use artworks in the space as tools towards exploring Latham's understanding of time and mode of thinking.

Seventeen works by John Latham will be included in this year's Venice Biennale, opening to the public on 13 May. The 57th edition, titled 'VIVA ARTE VIVA', is curated by Christine Macel.

This year's Biennale is organized into nine pavilions or 'chapters'. Latham's works will be on view in the 'Pavilion of Artists and Books'.

Athanasios Velios in conversation with Katherine Jackson

Athanasios Velios, Reader in Documentation at the Ligatus Research Centre, UAL, was principle investigator of “Archive as Event”, the project for which the online John Latham Archive was created. Art historian and FTHo archivist Katherine Jackson will join Velios to discuss the creation and use of the John Latham Archive and the application of the artist’s Event structure theory as a basis for the archive’s organisation.

Live Sound Performance

David Toop is a composer/musician, author and curator who has worked in many fields of sound art and music, including improvisation, sound installations, field recordings, pop music production, music for television, theatre and dance.  He was also a long-time collaborator with John Latham. For this live sound performance event Toop will collaborate with Rie Nakajima and Lucie Stepankova to respond to the space and history of Flat Time House.

John-Paul latham in conversation with Harriet Latham

One of John Latham’s three children, John-Paul Latham will be in discussion with granddaughter Harriet Latham to recall FTHo as a domestic environment and home. In a convivial atmosphere they will talk on how John Latham lived and worked in the space from the early 1980s up to its transformation to a living sculpture in 2003 and how that led to the founding of the art space it is today.

Flat Time House is hosting a series of informal in-discussion events with significant figures in the development of the institution. The conversations moderated by Gareth Bell-Jones will take place over successive weeks addressing the Mind, Brain, Body Event and Hand of the living sculpture. On Sunday April 9th we will hear from The Mind and The Hand.

LOUISA MARTIN LOSSY ECOLOGY PUBLICATION LAUNCH

Lossy Ecology is a new publication conceived and edited by Louisa Martin and published by Flat Time House. Borrowing from Latham’s Flat Time as well as Alfred Jarry’s ‘pataphysics, the book explores atypical experiences of embodiment, focusing on autism, with the aim of outlining a new body concept that is time-oriented.

For the launch event Martin will create a performative environment at FTHowhich will contain a reading from the book,an introduction to Flat Time by Gareth Bell-Jones, a talk by Sabel Gavaldon on ecologies of experience, followed by an in-conversation with the artist.
